So im a 25 y.o. male. The first 24 years of my life I have always been a very lazy person. Never wanting to exercise not even take a short walk. I would always prefer the metro or a car or a bus or anything. I never became extremely heavy but always a bit more than I needed (or wanted).
I had bad eating Habits. That doesn’t mean I always ate unhealthy food. But most of the time. Also I used to drink. Like a lot! Pretty much in daily basis but not huge amounts daily. Thankfully I didn’t smoke much. A total of 2 years split between 5 years (18-23).
Slowly in the recent years I wanted to change. I kept feeling worse about myself. Especially when I was doing something and felt incapable. A short run a long walk and anything that demanded physical activity. Also the image of myself especially in the summer months.
I had tried before going to them gym. Never successfully because after a month or two, I would always stop since it was too boring for me.
The last thing that triggered my change , was a trip I had with few friends during the Winter. It was a demanding 10 day holidays around north Italy. Included a lot of walking daily. A 4 hours hike . A full day in the mountain snowboarding. Lot of driving each day. Even a music festival! (electronic music non stop jumping around for hours).
Although I did manage to survive this holidays . Always felt tired and exhausted during the trip and felt very sad that I couldn’t fully enjoy it cause I was always so tired. At that trip I decided I must change. So it began…
When I returned I collected some money and bought a bike. (A mountain bike due to the various road conditions around my place dirt cement). I started with riding increasingly in distances especially as the summer was moving on and I had more good weather days. Also combined with some home training in between. Meaning basic exercises and body weight training. I did not want to go to the gym.
This changed my life! Ok I admit the first period was hard. Not seeing effects of your exercise and not being able to do much. But then I started to have progress. Thats when I really got into it.
By now I lost 12kg (100 kg to 88 and I am 1.83m tall also did a kind of diet not strict just reduced sweets and alcohol), I wear old clothes that I never thought I will fit in again. I feel much better with myself (because I kept my will to keep going) and because of how I look. But that’s not all.
Except those ‘expected’ results this new habit had another effect that I did not expect.
Exercising really relaxes me. I am looking forward for the moment of the day that I am gonna exercise . It relaxes me and brings me much joy clears my head. It is no longer something I force myself to do but something I cant wait to do.
Also enabled me to do more things. Ive been searching in my region about places I can now visit and see that I previously couldn’t. (for example gorges, remote beaches etc)
My will to keep going is higher than ever. The next part now that I am almost in my targeted weight , is to build some more muscular strength over this winter since with the bike I am mostly building my cardio all this time.
The habit of daily exercise changed my life and I heavily recommend you all to do it!
Find the exercise that suits you most! I recommend a combination of outdoor and indoor activities. Especially if you have access to nature around your home. The nice views and fresh air always helps!
